How will my course work?

Moodle is a VLE, or virtual learning environment, that was created specifically for online courses, and is designed to be easy to use, interactive and helpful.

Once you’ve enrolled and received your log in, you’ll be able to access your Diploma course, which is easy to follow and designed so that you always know where you are, what you have to do and how you can progress through the course.

Each unit is presented as a book, you just ‘turn’ the pages as you work through the unit. Moodle gives us the opportunity to provide you with varied activities to help your learning in each unit, such as quizzes, crosswords and word searches. Resources like videos and presentations are embedded into units whenever possible, so you don’t have to leave the Moodle to view them and you don’t need to download lots of documents.

On Moodle, it’s easy to:

  • Check your answers to unit activities
  • Submit your assessments
  • Receive feedback from an assessor
  • Keep up to date with any news or announcements relevant to your Diploma

How will my course progress?

The units have been written specifically for online learners, provided as ‘books’, for you to work through at your own pace.

Videos, presentations and web links are provided to broaden your understanding of a subject. These formative activities will help you to complete the assessment that you need to do for each unit, details of which are contained in the unit assessment brief.

How will I complete my units?

Each unit comes with an assessment brief. You will be able to access the assessment brief right at the beginning of a unit, so you can see what you are working towards. The assessment brief contains all the details you need about the assessment tasks that you must complete to achieve a unit.

Every assessment task is clearly mapped to the appropriate unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

The activities that you complete during your work on a unit have been developed so that you gain the knowledge, understanding and skills to complete the assessment.

The types of assessment are varied and interesting. The following are some examples, which can vary depending on which Diploma you’re studying:

  • research notes for a radio programme
  • e-presentation
  • leaflets
  • newspaper article
  • presentation paper with audio summary
  • report
  • diagrams
  • fact sheets
  • case studies
  • calculations
  • drawings

When you have finished your unit study, you submit your assessment tasks, which will be marked by an assessor. Once you have successfully completed a unit, you will be able to progress onto the next one.

How much time will I need?

An Aspire Access Diploma requires the achievement of 60 credits. Each unit in a Diploma carries a certain number of credits – these can be 3, 6 or 9.

The 60 credits comprise:

  • 15 credits from ungraded units
  • 45 credits from graded units (grades are pass, merit, distinction)

1 credit is estimated to take an "average" student up to 10 hours. These hours include all the activities needed to complete the credit, such as:

  • working through the unit
  • completing the activities provided
  • reading
  • your own research
  • preparing for the unit assessment
  • completing the unit assessment

What's the quickest time I could qualify?

Once enrolled you are given a total of 3 years to complete your diploma. You can complete the diploma within the 3 years, the actual completion time varies dependent on individual circumstances and how much time can be dedicated to working through and completing the diploma.

*Each unit has a maximum alotted time of 3 months ( once unlocked ) to complete.

What's the longest I could take?

The longest you would be allowed to complete your course would be three years from the date you start the course.

How will you help me study?

An Aspire Diploma contains a number of ungraded study skills units, for example:

  • English for Academic Study
  • Producing a Written Assignment
  • Research and Referencing

These units have been designed so that you can improve and refine your study skills to help you maximise your potential on the course. It also means that you are developing a skills set to assist you in your progression from the Diploma, whether in higher education, employment or training. You’ll be able to prove that you have these essential skills to employers.

What help is available on the course?

Once you enrol, you will have access to your course units and will be provided with a student handbook. In addition, an expert assessor will provide feedback on all of your assessments.
